The film title has plain white bold writing which makes it stand out to the black background. It gives out clues in the film that will be revealed towards the end.
Setting/Location:
The setting is revealed at the beginning when Brandon is hovering over Emily's dead body.Brandon looks very paranoid and nervous whilst crouching and looking at her. Firstly, this gets the audience thinking and asking numerous questions, such as, Why is she dead, who is she and how did it happen. This is a technique used a lot to draw the audience in.
Costumes/Props:
One of the major props we still is her bangles on her wrist. Whilst Emily is laying dead in the gutter. We see the blue bangles and there is a close up of them. We then see an image of Emily putting something into Brandon's locker. The audience can distinguish that it is Emily because of her bangles and makes us curious. This would of been one of the last things she done before she died so it puts the spotlight on the question. Why is she dead.
Editing/Camera Work:
At the beginning an establishing shot is created taking a picture of Emily lying in the gutter with Brandon crouching. Immediately, this creates a tense atmosphere and gets questions raised into why she is there and how she died. This will capture the audiences attention and will make them want to watch more.
How The Opening Sets Up A Story:
Brick establishes a tense atmosphere from early on, at the beginning, a girl who we later find out is Emily is lying dead in a gutter with a man called Brandon crouching next to her. In addition, we then see several clues and questions built up to try and find out who she was and why she was there. This really gaged the audiences interest and made them want to watch more.
Sound/Favourite Shot:
My favourite shot would have to be the first one where we see Emily lying on the floor and Brandon crouching over her. This really got me thinking and kept me interested. Also, straight after this shot, we see Emily putting her hand in Brandon's locker. This was a very important shot as we then know she has something to do with him.Music is played a lot at the beginning, you get the usual thriller music, very dim but powerful in the background which creates more tension.
Genre:
The genre 'Thriller' is established early on from when start asking questions. Automatically, a person is lying dead on the floor. This creates an Erie atmosphere and keeps the audience glued to their seats to find out more.
